Laughter is the best medicine

Testimony of an NLP Graduate: Jacob

After I was attacked by my best friend while he was on meth, I started asking God all these questions. “What do I need to do? I’m aimless, I’m clueless, and my family’s not talking to me. What do you want from me? Obviously, my choices are not the best way to go.”

For the first time in my life, I heard Him answer clearly, “I’m going to send you a transport to where you need to go.” I was on such a bender that I passed out on my friend’s couch. As soon as I woke up, she said, “You can’t stay on my couch anymore. Do you want a ride down to the Lighthouse Mission?” My head
was scrambled, but it was so clear that it was Him, and I jumped on it!

A couple days after that, I got ahold of my mom. For the first time in my life, she applied tough love by telling me, “We’re done with putting the effort into trying to help you,
letting you stay on our couch here and there.”

You saw someone like myself, who was broken, and put forth all this time, effort, and money to seeking change. That’s awesome!

I went into a deep depression, and God poked at me again. That same night, Aaron (the New Life Program Chaplain) spoke in chapel. I was seeking change so badly that I was desperate. It all made sense and it drew me into looking into the New Life Program a little bit more.

A few days later, I met with one of the staff. He gave me the clearest instructions I’ve ever been told by anybody: “The first thing I need you to do is meet with Aaron, and then you’re going to go see a mental health counselor, because you don’t just do 13 years of methamphetamine and be okay.” And that’s when I decided I was done. Done smoking weed, done with drinking, done with everything.

Before I joined the Program, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I’ve had a lot of dental work done over the years, because when I was fourteen I got hit in the face with a baseball and had to get fourteen root canals. And then I did 13 years of methamphetamine. So when I moved here, I was surprised to even have a tooth in my head. Thanks to the Mission’s dentist friend, I got my extractions done, and my dentures were covered by insurance. This was God working here.

I feel blessed! I feel like a whole new person. I have people doing double takes on me. Like, “This can’t be you!” It’s like night and day. It’s just overwhelming to think how much change is possible even for a sinner like me.

Really, the gratitude I have for everybody is overwhelming. Donors don’t have to donate, but you do and that’s awesome! I can totally understand that if you didn’t donate, none of this would be here. You saw someone like myself, who was broken, and put forth all this time, effort, and money to seeking change.

I want you to know: you are appreciated.
