Lighthouse Mission Ministries is providing food and shelter in its new Bellingham facility for hundreds who are homeless during the current winter storm that brought snow and sub-freezing temperatures.
The facility at 1312 F St. in Old Town opened in October and is near capacity now. It currently offers 234 beds under regular conditions, according to Hans Erchinger-Davis, president and CEO of Lighthouse Mission Ministries. It will reach the permitted total of 300 beds when they are able to staff the behavioral health dorms.
Also, Lighthouse Mission makes available 60 year-round Emergency Overnight Shelter beds on a walk-in basis, which were slightly under capacity as late morning Feb. 3. Another 15 to 20 extra severe weather beds are offered each night, depending on its staffing for the shift.
“We will keep all residents on-site during the day through this cold snap,” Erchinger-Davis said. “Due to safe staffing limitations, we are unable to bring in those just seeking day shelter into our building as we prioritize community members who require a full range of shelter services. We are always willing to take people on a case-by-case basis for any and all services if they are especially vulnerable, such as children, elderly or disabled people.”
