Megan: A Mother's Road to Recovery

A Mother’s Road to Recovery

Addiction Recovery Story in Bellingham, WA: From Homelessness to Hope

This addiction recovery story from Bellingham, Washington, shows how one woman overcame homelessness, addiction, and loss through the support of Lighthouse Mission Ministries. For individuals and families across Whatcom County, stories like Megan’s reveal what is possible when compassion meets opportunity.

Today, Megan is sober, raising her son, and helping others begin their recovery journey. But not long ago, her life looked very different.

A Decade Behind This Addiction Recovery Story

Before coming to the Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham, Megan spent more than 10 years battling addiction.

“I was in and out of addiction for over a decade,” Megan shares. “Because of that, I had to sign over custody of my younger children to my parents. I wasn’t really part of their lives for a long time.”

During those years, stability was nearly impossible to maintain. Like many individuals experiencing homelessness in Whatcom County, Megan moved from place to place, often staying in environments that made recovery harder.

“I lived outside a couple of times. I stayed in an RV without running water or electric heat. It was rough,” she says.

She wanted to change, but addiction kept pulling her back. Even after treatment, lasting recovery felt out of reach.

A Turning Point That Changed Everything

Megan’s life began to shift when she found out she was pregnant with her son.

“That’s what flipped the switch for me,” she explains. “I knew I needed to change my life.”

This moment gave her a new sense of purpose. She entered treatment again and made the decision to pursue a different path.

Megan applied to the Lighthouse Mission’s Agape recovery program for women and children in Bellingham, WA.

“I remember being so nervous,” she says. “I had never been in a program like that before. But I knew I needed to try something different.”

That decision marked the beginning of a lasting transformation.

Finding Hope and Faith at Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham

Before coming to the Mission, Megan did not have a strong spiritual foundation.

“I had some bad experiences that made it hard to trust anything related to church.”

However, what she found at the Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham was different.

She encountered a community rooted in compassion, accountability, and genuine care. Staff and residents walked alongside her, offering consistent support and encouragement.

“I saw the love from the staff and the other women. It changed everything,” Megan explains. “I felt accepted. I felt like God led me there.”

Through this environment, Megan began rebuilding her life step by step.

In February 2026, she reached an important milestone in her journey.

“I got baptized. It was a beautiful experience. Having everyone there supporting me meant so much,” she says.

Today, her perspective on faith is simple but powerful.

“Jesus means hope and redemption to me. He has shown me that no life is too broken.”

A New Purpose: Helping Others in Whatcom County

Megan’s transformation has come full circle.

Today, she serves as a recovery program apprentice and intake coordinator at Agape Home at the Lighthouse Mission, helping individuals in Bellingham and across Whatcom County take their first steps toward recovery.

“I knew I wanted to give back,” she says. “I wanted to help people who are in the same place I used to be.”

Because she has experienced addiction and recovery firsthand, she is able to connect deeply with those entering the program.

“I know what it’s like. I understand the struggles. I can relate to what they’re going through,” she explains.

Megan is also continuing her education. She is currently enrolled at City Vision University, working toward a degree in addiction counseling so she can serve even more people in Northwest Washington.

Support for Women and Children in Bellingham

One of the most powerful parts of Megan’s story is what it means for her family.

Because of the support she received through the Agape recovery program in Bellingham, she is now able to raise her son and build a stable future.

“I don’t know where I would be right now with my son, or if I would even have him, if it wasn’t for this support,” she says.

Programs like Agape provide safe housing, recovery support, and long-term stability for women and children in Whatcom County who are facing homelessness and addiction.
