Here at Lighthouse Mission Ministries we love seeing God work. If only you could see just how many lives we have seen changed each and every day. We cannot tell you all the stories, but we can tell you Neil’s story. It’s a story of drug addiction, fear, and desperation. But it’s also a story about how God can use those blessed by God to intervene on behalf of those who don’t even know Him. You see, God is calling all of us to Him… every single day. And he wants to partner with you to make more of these stories happen throughout the Whatcom County, and Bellingham city. Let’s hear from Neil about how his life as changed.

Seeing real renewal happen is nothing short of a miracle. We have watched as God has connected people who care, with individuals in need. Alcoholics who need the steady support of a helping hand. Homeless men needing a bed. Abused women in search of shelter. And each time a shoot of renewal sprouts out of the ground we marvel at how God has chosen, once again, to partner with us as we help those in the most dire need.

For most of her life, Shawn felt like she was falling through the cracks. Through your help, the light of Jesus shone down through those cracks and saved her! Abuse as a child led Shawn into abusive relationships later in life. Shawn realized the strength of God’s love, experienced healing, and left shame behind.

You supported Ben – and his family. Ben Holmes had many struggles and lived at the Mission’s Drop-In Center on and off. After he passed away, his parents attended the memorial service we hosted and learned something surprising. Your support made it all possible!

The Lighthouse Mission is honored to get a front row seat to watch as God transforms people’s lives throughout the state and the city of Bellingham. Robert’s story is just another beautiful example of how your donations are helping people restore their lives.

Hans Erchinger-Davis, CEO of the Lighthouse Mission, wanted to share a Christmas greeting this year. “This Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus. The king of glory who came to be born in a manger. Luke records in his gospel that one day a man met Jesus along the road and said, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, ‘Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'”

Two Celebrations of Life for Rev. Albert Archer will be held in Arizona and Washington state. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Feb. 8, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Valley Baptist Church (555 S. Mountain Road, Mesa, Ariz.) with Rev. Kevin Cowling officiating.

Ron Doerksen sat at a desk in the front office of the Lighthouse Mission Ministries (LMM) building on Dec. 23, awaiting the next guest to walk through the doors stationed below the large welcome sign parallel to Astor Street. He donned a long-sleeve shirt with the John 3:16 verse “Your Life Matters” printed on the front and “Born Once, Die Twice. Born Twice, Die Once” on the back. His gentle smile, wealth of knowledge about LMM and its services and Christ-centered approach to life makes him one of the shelter’s most valued volunteers.

We observe the impact of deep trauma, the pain of addiction, the despair of job loss and the crushing weight of mental health challenges. But we also see resilience, the spark of hope and the transformative power of healing in Christ.

For over 100 years, Lighthouse Mission Ministries has celebrated Christmas with the cold, hungry and vulnerable in Bellingham. Each day, we strive to bring Jesus Christ as the beacon of light for those navigating homelessness. We provide warm meals, safe shelter and crucial resources like addiction recovery, budgeting, parenting and job training. We could not serve our community without the generosity of our amazing financial supporters.

Volunteering to help the homeless in Whatcom County, especially in Bellingham at the Lighthouse Mission Ministries, is an impactful way to give back to your community. We interviewed one of our wonderful volunteers, Peggy. Her experience volunteering at Lighthouse Mission’s Base Camp is an insight into the kind hearts of people like Peggy.

Toxic charity vs. Smart charity. As believers in Christ, it is one of our God-given responsibilities to care for the poor. Over 2,000 verses in the Bible illustrate this. But, how do we effectively serve the poor? One way to ensure that you’re serving your homeless neighbors appropriately is by making sure to practice smart charity instead of toxic charity.

Lighthouse Mission Ministries is providing food and shelter in its new Bellingham facility for hundreds who are homeless during the current winter storm that brought snow and sub-freezing temperatures. The facility at 1312 F St. in Old Town opened in October and is near capacity now. It currently offers 234 beds under regular conditions, according to Hans Erchinger-Davis, president and CEO of Lighthouse Mission Ministries. It will reach the permitted total of 300 beds when they are able to staff the behavioral health dorms.

Earlier this year, Frank, a Base Camp guest, had a medical emergency where he lost consciousness. Staff responded immediately and performed CPR until medical professionals arrived. Tragically, Frank passed away. When the EMT staff asked for his emergency contacts, the reply that came was grim, “There are no emergency contacts.”

A new building that will more than replace Base Camp, as well as provide enhanced, specialized care to families, the elderly, and those who require medical or mental health support.

Agape Home hosted their first conference and rolled out the red carpet! Giving our guests the royal treatment, with delicious food, fellowship and encouragement. The theme was “Daughters of the King” and the ladies were blessed by multiple guest speakers who declared powerful testimonies, led interactive activities, and shared God’s heart.

It takes a special calling and a heart for people and Jesus to do this work! Supporting the Whatcom County and Bellingham area’s homeless, and continuing to bring the light and hope of Christ to those who are most in need is difficult work! But because of your partnership with our mission, and your regular recurring financial gifts, we are excited about continuing the work that God has called for us to do on your behalf.

Do you know what it takes to minister to hundreds and hundreds of the community’s most vulnerable people? It takes a constant commitment from donors who regularly make online recurring donations. Constant prayers and spiritual support. And also, volunteers. We are so thankful for all of you.

Winter is harsh for those who are homeless. The cold, the dirt, the loneliness – and the holidays, all lead towards a desperate need. The Lighthouse Mission, throughout the holiday season, sees stories like these time and time again and we need your support as we work to ensure the welfare of many who are in need during this Christmas and colder holiday times. Each year, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless to promote awareness, education, and action surrounding hunger and homelessness the week before Thanksgiving. To give you an idea of how many people experience hunger and homelessness, about 43.1 million Americans live below the poverty level, while 549,000 people are homeless on a typical night.
